What is Functional Nutritional Therapy?

Simply stated, Functional Nutritional Therapy is an evidence-based, holistic approach to achieving optimal health and wellness through targeted and personalized, dietary and lifestyle changes. This approach considers the whole person – physiologically, mentally, and emotionally – and honors the concept of “innate intelligence” – which supports the idea that the body has an immense capacity (and desire) to restore, regenerate, and heal itself, particularly when given the proper tools, support, and nutrients to do so. This is the basis of my work. Functional Nutritional Therapy listens to the body, and the many signs, symptoms, and feedback it is constantly giving us, as a means for restoring function and overall alignment. This is further enhanced alongside the use of other comprehensive, nutritional assessment tools to uncover areas of strength, weakness, and/or imbalance within the body, with the ultimate goal being to identify and address the root cause of systemic symptoms and/or dysfunction.

As a practitioner of this paradigm, I firmly believe in the healing power of REAL food, and that many of modern society’s current health problems result from weaknesses within the body’s physiological foundations brought on by poor nutrition. These key foundations include optimally functioning digestion, blood sugar balance, fatty acid balance, mineral balance, and adequate hydration – and wholesome, real FOOD (aka: one’s diet) is what these foundations are ultimately built upon. When the foundations become weak, imbalances in other body systems often occurs (as evidenced by the prevalence of various, nagging, chronic symptoms, conditions, and disease which plague much of the population today). All of these biochemical foundations are immensely important to one’s health, and together – when optimally supported – they help to determine the overall well-being and function of the body.

I am dedicated to supporting my clients through the lens of this time-honored wisdom, and in helping them do the deep, foundational work that is required to reverse the negative effects of the modern diet. Thus, I place a great emphasis on the importance of a properly prepared, nutrient-dense, whole food diet (alongside the equally important components of a well-balanced lifestyle), as one of the greatest tools used in our efforts to reach your health goals, restore vitality, and ultimately achieve optimal, resounding, vibrant health.

My Approach

In regard to one’s health, we ALL have a unique experience and story to share. YOU are not just “another person” suffering from “another condition.” YOU are the sum of many bio-individual parts, and it is imperative that this be recognized, honored, and interconnected if true healing is to occur. Your feelings, struggles, journey, and hopes are all incredibly valid and an important consideration of your unique circumstances; and thus, these also deserve to be heard and supported – especially when you just can’t seem to get the answers and/or results that you are looking for. Ahead of our work together, and certainly during and throughout that process, I strive to obtain this complete and integrative picture of who YOU really are, and to truly listen to, and empathize with, the unique path that you are on.

As a holistic health practitioner, one of my fundamental goals in working with clients is to empower people to become knowledgeable about – and responsible for – their own health. This begins with education, along with the understanding and belief in the importance of consistently consuming nutrient-dense, nourishing foods that support one’s own, unique biochemistry. I further utilize a number of clinical assessment tools and targeted, high-quality, therapeutic supplementation, combined with cutting-edge functional lab testing, to create effective and powerful healing protocols that are incredibly personalized, and which go well beyond the treatment of dis-ease, by directly addressing the root cause of the symptoms you are experiencing. This is the heart of holistic, functional, integrative wellness. No stone is left unturned, and we can thus begin to connect the various (and sometimes seemingly unrelated) dots of both your symptomatic and clinical presentation. By looking at this complete and comprehensive picture, and by leaning on objective data from lab testing, we can eliminate any guesswork and specifically identify where the body is in need of additional, therapeutic support.

That said, I do have an important disclaimer to share: this work is not for the faint of heart. It will expect and require an extensive commitment from YOU. And while many can benefit from this approach, only those who are truly motivated and 100% committed should consider embarking on this path. I will be asking a LOT of you, but to achieve the results we both seek, YOU are the one who ultimately has to implement the hard changes that will be asked of you. Yet by committing to this work, I can also promise you that I am equally as committed to supporting you on this path – as your cheerleader, confidant, coach, problem-solver, and guide – for the extent of our time together, and to the best of my abilities.

This journey is well worth the reward. Yet you do not need to navigate it alone. I am here to walk alongside you and support you on that path.
